Strong Heroines, Magical Realms, And Emotionally Charged Adventures
Debbie Cassidy shares how mythology, strong heroines, and organic storytelling shape her fantasy romance novels. She offers advice for aspiring authors and discusses world-building, character development, and creative inspiration.
Debbie Cassidy, a USA Today Bestselling Author, has become a powerful voice in the realm of fantasy romance. Renowned for her thrilling blend of mythology, emotionally rich storylines, and strong female leads, Cassidy has captivated readers across the globe with her vivid imagination and dynamic storytelling. Her journey from psychology graduate to full-time author reflects the same resilience and transformation her characters embody.
Raised in a quiet UK town, Cassidy’s stories draw inspiration from her cultural heritage and a deep love for myth and magic—especially Indian mythology. Her books, which often merge urban fantasy with paranormal romance, are characterised by richly imagined worlds, fast-paced plots, and heroines who refuse to back down. Among them is Quinn from Wolves of Hawthorne Cove and the morally grey Anamaya from the upcoming romantasy Wicked Onyx, each resonating with readers through their depth and determination.
Debbie Cassidy is a captivating storyteller who masterfully blends emotion, action, and myth into unforgettable fantasy journeys with fearless female leads.
In an exclusive interview with Reader’s House Magazine, Cassidy opened up about her creative journey and writing process. When asked what led her to urban fantasy and reverse harem genres, she shared, “I grew up reading urban fantasy books, and so it felt natural to write in that genre because I had such love for it. Writing reverse harem was never planned. It happened organically in my Chronicles of Midnight series. The characters demanded it, and so did the story. I was powerless to resist.”
Cassidy’s heroines are not only fierce and capable—they are also complex. Anamaya, from Wicked Onyx, is a standout example. “She’s one of my first morally grey heroines,” Cassidy said. “She’s last of a disgraced sorcerer bloodline. Exiled and cursed, she’s had it tough. Friendship might as well be a curse word in her book.” As Anamaya navigates the perilous world of Nightsbridge Academy, she’s on a mission to uncover the truth and claim justice—a theme that mirrors Cassidy’s own drive to chart her own course as a storyteller.
Building immersive fantasy worlds is no easy feat, but for Cassidy, inspiration often arrives in flashes. “My worlds tend to come to me in dreams or bolts of inspiration,” she said. “I then spend days and weeks thinking about them and making random notes on my phone.” Once the writing begins, she allows the world-building to evolve alongside the plot, often discovering new details during the process.
Balancing action, romance, and character development is a skill Cassidy has honed over time. She credits her instincts—and a supportive team of alpha and beta readers—for helping her find the right rhythm. “I can usually feel when something is off and figure out what is needed to fix the issue,” she explained.
Her passion for mythology is deeply woven into her storytelling. Cassidy’s personal library boasts an extensive reference section that spans Norse, Celtic, Slavic, Greek, and Hindu mythology. “I often find myself going down rabbit holes filled with juicy information that spark ideas and stories,” she said. Currently, Hindu mythology is providing a rich vein of inspiration.
For aspiring fantasy romance authors, Cassidy’s advice is practical and rooted in research. “Read the bestsellers so you can see why they are so loved,” she urged. “Read books on mythology to get your brain teeming with ideas… Read a few popular fantasy books, so you can be inspired by the wonderful world-building. Research is key!”
When asked which character she feels most connected to, Cassidy reflected, “There’s a little piece of me in each of my characters—yep, even the villains. But if I had to choose, I would say I was the most connected to Quinn from my Wolves of Hawthorne Cove Series. I put way too much of myself into her, flaws included.”
With each new release, Debbie Cassidy continues to redefine and elevate the fantasy romance genre. Her ability to blend rich mythology, nuanced character arcs, and emotionally charged storytelling sets her apart as one of the genre’s most compelling voices.
