Inspiring Creativity Through Art, Antiquities, And Storytelling
Marlene M. Bell, award-winning author, speaks about her transition from artistic pursuits to crafting international thrillers, blending suspense, romance, and rich historical detail inspired by her passion for antiquities and art.
Marlene M. Bell is a remarkable author who has seamlessly transitioned from visual arts and sheep husbandry to the world of international thrillers and cozy mysteries. Renowned for her ability to craft genre-crossing stories, Bell’s work marries her passions for antiquities, exploration, and storytelling. Her celebrated Annalisse series, along with other standalone mysteries like A Hush at Midnight, showcases her talent for blending gripping suspense, romance, and richly imagined settings. An accomplished photographer and painter, Bell draws from her artistic background and personal love of history to infuse her novels with sensory details that take readers on vivid journeys across the world.
A native of Texas with a deep connection to nature, Bell began her career writing articles on sheep husbandry and capturing the beauty of her surroundings through the lens of a camera. Her artistry often spills into her writing, lending both accuracy and vibrancy to the visual landscapes she creates in her stories. She also finds inspiration in her passion for antiquarian books and antique furniture, which adds layers of historical authenticity to her plots. Readers who delve into Bell‘s works are met with thrilling narratives, heart-pounding romance, and historical intrigue, making her a master of genre-blending storytelling.
Marlene M. Bell captivates readers with immersive storytelling, blending history, romance, and suspense into unforgettable journeys across stunning settings around the globe.
Bell’s foray into fiction was almost serendipitous, as she stumbled into it out of curiosity and a love for a challenge. She explained, “Using events from my lifetime, I developed a plan to weave adventures into fiction and attract new readers who enjoy travel-by-book. The crime and mystery genres felt like the best direction to entertain a worldwide following.” Blending meticulous research with fast-paced plots, Bell crafts stories that are both thrilling and immersive. For her, research is key. She organizes plot ideas on index cards, making careful notes where visual research is needed to bring scenes to life. By relying on descriptive sensory details, she invites the reader to “step into” her stories and experience them fully.
The Annalisse series, which carries readers to the breathtaking regions of Turkey and Greece, is a testament to Bell’s dedication. While writing her first novel, Stolen Obsession, Bell discovered the rich history and stunning beauty surrounding the Castle of St. Peter in Bodrum. She hopes to one day visit locations like this and Crete, where her characters Annalisse Drury and Alec Zavos embark on dangerous, globe-trotting adventures—albeit Bell jokingly notes she’d prefer her travels without “the murder and chaos.”
Although her thrillers are known for their romantic tension, Bell says the chemistry between characters like Annalisse and Alec evolves naturally as she writes. “I prefer organically driven character actions because they tend to read more realistic, especially when it comes to dialogue,” she shared. While she begins with a structured outline of ideas, Bell allows her characters to lead the narrative. “The couple encounters so many suspenseful and thrilleresque moments together. The slow, romantic respite offers readers a breather from the action,” she explained.
Bell’s love for photography and painting has also influenced her creative process in unexpected ways. For instance, one of her ranch sunset photographs was transformed into inspiration for the cover of A Hush at Midnight, a standalone mystery set in a small Texas town. Working with a designer, Bell was thrilled to see one of her own artistic works refined and incorporated into the finished book cover. She explained, “Readers do indeed judge books by their covers. In the advent of online shopping from thumbnail photos on phones, a book cover has to catch the eye quickly. A sunset does this nicely.”
Switching things up with A Hush at Midnight, Bell infused her Southern roots into a culinary-themed cozy mystery—a significant tonal departure from her Annalisse thrillers. However, this new direction came with its own unexpected challenges. For Bell, the cozy mystery genre demanded a slower pace and more understated storytelling. She reflected that cozy readers enjoy subtle, domestic stories with crime elements, but without the graphic intensity of traditional thrillers. While she acknowledges the creative restrictions of writing cozies, it was an experience that further shaped her versatility as an author.
Balancing her established style of faster-paced fiction with the demands of new genres is no small feat, but Bell tackles these challenges head-on and continues to expand her horizons. Currently at work on a domestic suspense thriller set in a snowy rural location, she aims to take her readers on a fresh, high-stakes journey with her upcoming release, expected in the spring of 2026. Beyond that, she has hinted at a desire to craft a time-travel story. Inspired by her fascination with the 17th century and her love of historical fiction, she has long considered writing about an American character transplanted to a Commonwealth country such as Australia or New Zealand.
When asked what advice she would offer aspiring authors, Bell emphasized the importance of studying the craft extensively. “Mixing genres and doing it well comes with years of experience. The advice I give to all new writers is always the same: READ books by other authors and STUDY FICTION in general,” she advised. She encourages writers to familiarize themselves with the expectations of their chosen genre and to strike a balance between adhering to these norms and carving out their own unique voice. “Most of all, authors are best served by writing to readers’ expectations and not their own.”
Marlene M. Bell continues to prove that her curiosity and creative talents know no bounds. Whether she’s leading readers across Mediterranean ruins in search of treasures and intrigue or inviting them into the piney woods of East Texas for a culinary-themed mystery, Bell remains a captivating storyteller who excels in creating thrilling, richly detailed worlds brimming with adventure, romance, and suspense.
