Steve Bellinger, a highly acclaimed science fiction author, has built a remarkable career spanning novels, radio dramas, screenwriting, and fan fiction. His unique blend of creative storytelling, meticulous research, and a passion for exploring diverse narratives has left an indelible mark on the genre. Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago by a single mother who instilled a love for reading, Bellinger’s journey to becoming a celebrated writer is as inspiring as the stories he crafts.

Bellinger’s love for science fiction was sparked at a young age when he discovered the works of Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert Heinlein. Coupled with his fascination for rocket launches and the possibilities of science, these influences played a pivotal role in shaping his writing style. “What appealed to me most was the way they would often include real science in their stories, which is always my goal,” says Bellinger.

His debut novel, The Chronocar: An Urban Adventure in Time, became a landmark in his writing career. A time travel story that delves into Black American history alongside the intricacies of science fiction, the book won multiple awards, including the Best Indie Book Award in the science fiction category. Reflecting on his debut’s success, Bellinger describes the thrill of winning and traveling with his wife to receive accolades as one of the most unforgettable experiences of his career.

Bellinger’s storytelling extends beyond novels to other creative platforms. A devoted fan of Star Trek, he shares a personal connection to the franchise with his wife, Donna. Together, they’ve attended numerous conventions and even plan to renew their wedding vows in full Star Trek style, an idea that reflects the couple’s shared enthusiasm for the universe.

In addition to his novels, Bellinger is known for his radio drama Day of the Martians, which he considers his magnum opus. Inspired by hearing Orson Welles’ original War of the Worlds broadcast as a college freshman, Bellinger created a modern version that premiered ten years later on the 40th anniversary of Welles’ production. “Produced with my homemade recording studio and featuring amazing performances, I’ve been told by more than one person that it is better than the original,” he shares with pride.

Bellinger also explores fan fiction, combining beloved universes like Highlander and Star Trek. “The beauty of fan fiction is that the characters and settings are already established. You only have to deal with the actual story,” he explains. For him, fan fiction provides a way to unblock creativity and experiment with new ideas. His crossover fan fiction received glowing reviews from fans, further solidifying his expertise in navigating both original and derivative storytelling.

Not content to focus solely on entertaining audiences, Bellinger has also written for educational purposes. As a Sunday School teacher, he penned junior high texts and skits, using humor and relevance to engage students. Projects like The Bible News Update, which reimagined the nativity story as a live news report, showcase his ability to bring fresh creativity to different audiences.

Bellinger’s latest works include his disaster fiction novel Lines of Force: The End of the World as We Know It, self-published in 2024, alongside ongoing efforts to adapt his novels into screenplays. Looking ahead, he offers advice to aspiring writers: “Whatever you want to become, just do it.”

From award-winning books and audio productions to imaginative fan fiction and Sunday School plays, Steve Bellinger’s storytelling transcends mediums and genres, leaving a legacy that is both inspiring and enduring.
